XJMail, a Japanese emailer for EPOC Updated2003/Jan/02 XJMail 1.31 was released.

What's XJMail

XJMail is a flexible email client for non-Unicode EPOC operating system, released under a BSD-like license. Though it's mainly targeted for Japanese users, it should be relatively easy to localize it for any other language, and of course you can use US-ASCII without any modification. As far as the authors know, it runs on Series5 /5MX /5MX Pro /Revo /RevoPlus /Mako /Series7 /NetBook /Geofox ONE /MC218 /WINS.

The latest "official" version is V1.31.

What's new in Ver. 1.31

For a full list of new features/improvements, please see history.txt (written in Japanese).

Features

XJMail has many features that are not seen in standard Email app.

What do I need to install, other than XJMail package?

Importing from/ Exporting to other mailers

Thanks to XJMail's simple mh format, things are especially easy if you're using non-MS email client. If you can read Japanese, a list (not comprehensive) of "how to import from/ export to this mailer" is here: xjm_conv.html.

License

XJMail license agreement, which is written in XJM_COPY.TXT (in Japanese, an English translation is XJM_COPY.ENG) is based on BSD License/FreeBSD License.

XJMail developers

For the moment, XJMail is developed and maintained by KAWABE (ktkawabe@ hi-ho.ne.jp), KONDO (rey@ fd.catv.ne.jp), and cars (carz@ nifty.com).

Mailinglist (in Japanese, mainly)

There's a mailing list (xjmail-test ML) for the users/developers of XJMail. Here in the ML, we developers discuss the development issues, release schedule and so on. However, the users can ask questions to OTHER USERS or report bugs to the developers etc. in this mailing list.

Note: Please do not expect that this ML acts as a kind of "XJMail Claim Desk". If you think you need such a thing, probably XJMail is not the software for you. (We developers hope that XJMail is also useful for you, and that's almost the only reason why we release it as a free software.) You can see the details at
http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/ktkawabe/XJMail/ML.html
(unfortunately, this is written only in Japanese).

Misc.

You can read the installation document for XJMail install_eng.txt and the help text xjm_hlp_eng.html online.

Download

Please see the table at top of this page here for downloading XJMail.

XJMail public beta

Other than the official release, we may release the public beta version here. When new features are added, bugs are fixed etc., that version is first put here for a test purpose. It might be that you cannot find any description for the new features. You may find some incompatibility between the document and the program. We cannot assure that the beta will be released as the "public" version in the future. Please do understand that this is only a beta release. If you understand, you can use it as far as you do not infringe XJM_COPY.TXT (in Japanese, an English translation is XJM_COPY.ENG).

XJMail 1.32.1 beta (20030418n) was released.

1.32.1 beta is a bug-fix release of 1.32 beta. Though there're several things (including minor ones) fixed, the serious ones are the followings:

Improvements in 1.32.1 beta over 1.31 are:

About old JM5

I (ktkawabe) will continue to distribute JM5 (the original JM5 as well as JM5 for 5MX). However, the JM5 developers will not continue user support of the original JM5. For JM5MX, the author (Mr. Iriyama) stopped the development, but is still willing to do user-support as long as there are users.

You can download old JM5s here.

ALEPPO tools

I have written some tools to
  1. use any kind of SGML editors instead of MS Word for writing EPOC help,
  2. and to allow the use of utf8 charset for writing EPOC help.
These are explained in a separate document: http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~ktkawabe/aleppo/.
