Current efforts to stem the spread of gang violence in the United States are having an impact and must continue. Recent crime statistics indicate a continued downward trend in the violent crime rate. Presently, there is an unprecedented level of cooperation between federal law enforcement agencies and our state and local partners as a result of the Attorney General's Anti-Violent Crime Initiative. Law enforcement strategies must be focused and combined with equally important suppression, intervention and prevention programs in order to be successful in dramatically reducing the level of gang violence in America.
