Overall, 55 states reported under the GFSA for the 1998-99 school year. These states reported that they expelled a total of 3,523 students from school for bringing in a firearm to school. Fifty-four states reported the number of students expelled by school level. Fifty-seven percent of the expulsions by school level were students in high school, 33 percent were in junior high, and 10 percent were in elementary school.
