The 34th Annual Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll Of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools
Lowell C. Rose and Alec M. Gallup

A major focus in this year's poll is the No Child Left Behind Act, signed into law on 8 January 2002. The poll set out to determine how the public is reacting to the prospect of an increased federal role. Fifty-seven percent believe the federal government's increased involvement is a good thing; 68% of Americans would go beyond the requirements of the NCLBA and require all 50 states to use the same nationally standardized test to measure student achievement. Although not suggested by the NCLBA, 66% would go so far as to have a national curriculum. In response to specific provisions of the NCLBA, support among Americans is evident in a number of areas.
